Prescriptive standards within fire safety and building regulations provide generalised requirements to achieve satisfactory levels of fire safety, both in terms of occupancy and building design structure.

In modern times, as buildings and processes have become more complex, fire engineered solutions are being called upon more and more to seek  alternative methods of achieving  high standards of fire safety.

Consideration must be given to the occupancy type and number, the fire hazard itself, the building character, adequate means of raising the alarm and escape, fire detection etc etc. 

It is only by considering these factors that you will able to identify if adequate levels of fire safety are achievable by following prescriptive standards.  If it is found that it is not, a fire engineered solution in achieving a satisfactory level of fire safety may be required.
